Having a Pop at Poppies

October, so poppies are blooming in shopping centres, superstores and pubs. “Lest we forget” runs an accompanying motto. However, seemingly martial amnesia is widespread. With the budget looming a continuing theme in the news is the apparently vital need for the government to increase military spending.

That there is a threat of war is not news for socialists who fully understand this is and will remain the case for as long as capitalism continues to exist. How many more cenotaphs bearing the endlessly added to lists of young people’s names who didn’t (never have and never will) die for king and country. They are those slaughtered when market competition becomes too acute.

There can be no war to end all wars, the First World War claim was confounded just twenty years or so after it ended. The only way to end war is to end capitalism.
